Only 15 years ago, a diagnosis of testicular cancer was grim news. Ten times as many patients died then as now. But dramatic advances in therapeutic drugs in the last two decades, along with improved diagnostics and better tests to gauge the extent of the disease, have boosted survival rates remarkably. Now, testicular cancer often is completely curable, especially if found and treated early.
For unknown reasons, the disease is about four times more common in white men than in black men.
Physicians have various methods to help diagnose testicular cancer. Often a physical exam can rule out disorders other than cancer. Imaging techniques can help indicate possible tumors.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women, according to the American Cancer Society. Since 1987, more women have died each year of lung cancer than of breast cancer.
Detecting lung cancer in its early stages is difficult in some cases because the disease spreads very quickly and symptoms often don't appear until the disease is advanced. Only about 15 percent of lung cancers are found before the cells have spread to lymph nodes or distant organs.
Still, the survival rate for the disease has improved over the years. The one-year survival rate for patients is about 40 percent today compared with 32 percent in 1973. And five-year survival is up from 8 percent in the 1960s to 14 percent today. Improvement in survival rates can be attributed, at least partially, to diagnostics and new drugs that the Food and Drug Administration has approved . . . read more

Because the prostate is just below the bladder and directly in front of the rectum, a doctor can check the size and condition of the gland by inserting a rubber-gloved finger into the rectum.
This digital rectal exam (DRE) has for years been the gold standard for detecting prostate cancer as well as the noncancerous disorder benign prostatic hyperplasia.
In 1985, FDA approved the first test for monitoring blood levels of a substance called prostate specific antigen ( PSA ), which, when elevated, can indicate cancer presence.
PSA is an ideal marker for prostate cancer because it is basically restricted to prostate cells. PSA test can reduce unnecessary prostate biopsies . . . read more
